THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
This hymn was written by a traveling evangelist named George Bennard. He wrote this song in 1912 in Albion, Michigan. After being mocked by some teenagers at a revival meeting, Bennard was troubled and began reflecting on Christ and the cross. He had a vision-like experience where he imagined Christ on the cross and the words and melody seemed to come easily to him. Over the course of a few months he finished the song and it quickly spread in popularity. It is now considered one of the most beloved Christian hymns in history. Below are the lyrics to this hymn.
Verse 1
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suff’ring and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.Chorus
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it someday for a crown.Verse 2
Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world
Has a wondrous attraction for me
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark CalvaryVerse 3
In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine
Such a wonderful beauty I see
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify meVerse 4
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away
Where His glory forever I’ll share
The words in the third verse stand out to me. “In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, such a wonderful beauty I see.” It was the precious blood of Jesus that was poured out for us. The Holy Son of God crushed for our sin. And it was this sacrifice which pardoned and sanctified us. Because of His blood we are washed clean. Praise the Lord!
Can’t wait for Sunday!
