WHY WE SING – PART 8

Another reason we sing is so that we REMEMBER God’s promises. God is very clear in His word about us remembering who He is and what He has done. God’s people are told over and over to remember, because we are really good at FORGETTING

Before entering into the promised land God tells the people, “take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” (Deut 6:12) How could they possibly forget what God had done for them in Egypt with the plagues and parting the Red Sea? And yet we are told in Judges that, “the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.” (Judges 3:7)

The Psalms also challenge us to remember. “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands. (Psalm 143:5) And then in Psalm 103, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

Well, what does all this have to do with singing? Singing is a powerful and proven tool to help us MEMORIZE. Many people can remember lyrics to songs they heard as children because music tends to stick with us. This is an amazing reason for us to continue to prioritize and value singing both privately and corporately. As we embrace and engage in singing these songs filled with truth about God, we are able to remember His promises and His character.

10,000 REASONS

This song was written by Matt Redman over a decade ago and has become one of the most popular worship songs in the world. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week I have been thinking again and again of this song. It so appropriately calls us to praise the Lord with thanksgiving for the amazing things He has done for us.

[Verse 1]
The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

[Verse 2]
You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

[Verse 3]
And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore

Whether it’s the evening or morning we ought to bless the Lord. For his love, patience, goodness and kindness, we ought to bless the Lord. From now on until forever, we ought to bless the Lord.

Can’t wait for Sunday
